In everything; give thanks!

One of the most difficult things to do is giving thanks. Even without indulging into Christianity, thanksgiving in itself is a profound act of professional etiquette. We have always been taught to humble ourselves and express our gratitude for whatever somebody does to us. I don’t know about you, but this has often elapsed me. Either due to ignorance or sometimes we just think whatever good thing someone does to us; it’s their obligation. We have been accustomed to giving thanks only for good acts people do to us. So when nothing good happens to you, you don’t give thanks! This sounds perfectly right, right? The word of God tells us something different!!

1ST Thessalonians 5:18 says ‘In everything, give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you’. Now that is an absolutely astounding statement right there. It took me some time to absorb this. So even when I’m going through difficulty, I should thank God; I asked myself? Paul, in Romans 5:3-5 further emphasized “we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” If you read that portion of scripture in context, you will realize that it was as if he was disclosing a secret. He says “we” meaning him being part of it…something he has done and seen the fruits. He was advising Roman Saints to always rejoice and give thanks even when they go through trials, not only cause God is in control but as a fundamental secret to letting God’s grace to operate in your life.

There have been times when I have read this and thought; really? I am not totally persuaded that everything that befalls me is His perfect plan for me in any circumstance. If God is really good why does He have to make me go through ‘stuff? If you have asked yourself such a question, you are your own worst enemy! You are contemplating ‘going through stuff’. You think that you have to go through hardships! What Paul meant is that we should always give thanks – whatsoever. The moment you practice it and make it a behavior, you will not even go through the sufferings he is talking about! Paul was a brilliant fellow and anticipated that people would reason like ‘babies’… You have to realize ‘sufferings’ reveal something about your faith. The testing of your faith strengthens it. In other words that you should be completely convinced that God is in full control and that He loves you. No wonder then he says ‘we rejoice’. What he was emphasizing is Thanksgiving. Giving thanks is an act of faith. When you thank God always – regardless, nothing bad will ever befall you.

The moment I received a revelation upon thanksgiving, my perspective completely changed. I began doing exactly what 1st Chronicles 16:34 says, that I give thanks unto the Lord for he is good and his mercy endureth forever. As to how good He is, you cannot even begin to measure.

Give thanks…
